About Venice Ristorante & Wine Bar’s Sommelier’s

James Leonard grew up in Gloucester, VA where he was lucky to hang around his mother and grandmother’s wine shop and restaurant, Red White & Bordeaux. After attending Full Sail University and obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Digital Art; he followed his passion for wine and great food and immediately went back into fine dining. Landing in Richmond VA, he began to create wonderful dining experiences for restaurants such as Max’s on Broad, Morton’s Steakhouse, and eventually the Jefferson Hotel. Along the way James became a Certified Sommelier by the court of master sommeliers of America, and led some very well known bar programs such as “Pasture” by Jason alley and select wine lists for “The Lemaire”. Moving to Denver simply for a change of scenery after the 2020 pandemic, James has settled in nicely at Venice restaurant with Justin Mueller and Alessandro Carollo, and plans to bring smiles and memorable dining experiences to downtown Denver.

Originally from Philadelphia, Justin Mueller began his professional career as a high school English teacher.  After a three year stint teaching, he decided to pursue hospitality full-time, a field he had always worked in throughout his college and graduate school years.  He spent the last six years working in top fine-dining restaurants in New York and San Francisco, most notably Atelier Crenn and Spruce.  While working for the Bacchus Group (Spruce, The Village Pub), Justin obtained his Advanced certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers, and sat for the Master Sommelier Diploma Examination.  He and his wife moved to Denver in December 2020 to bring their fine-dining and wine knowledge to a new market where they can continue to grow as professionals and foster excitement about wine and beverage.
